Victor Lowe collection of Alfred North Whitehead materials

Abstract

Alfred North Whitehead was an English mathematician and philosopher born on the Isle of Thanet in 1861. The bulk of the collection is formed by correspondence between some members of the Whitehead family: Alfred North Whitehead, his wife Evelyn Willoughby-Wade Whitehead, their son T. North Whitehead, and their daughter-in-law Margaret Whitehead dating from the 1920s-1940s.

Abstract

Victor Lowe (born 1907) was a professor of philosophy at The Johns Hopkins University, and the biographer of mathematician and philosopher, Alfred North Whitehead. This collection of papers largely relates to Lowe's research into the life of Whitehead and consists mainly of research notes, correspondence, and articles about Whitehead collected by Lowe. Included also are some personal papers which Lowe re-filed with these research files.

The Johns Hopkins Center for Italian Studies at Villa Spelman was established in the early 1970s in accordance with the bequest of Leolyn and Timothy Mather Spelman. The property was sold by the university in September 2008. This collection consists of records of the Villa Spelman from 1961 to 2009; the bulk of the material dates from 1980 to 2000.

Virginia C. Blackhead music manuscripts

Abstract

Virginia C. Blackhead (1882-1969) was the superintendent of the Peabody Preparatory from 1932 to 1944. Blackhead was also the director of the Baltimore and Ohio Women's Music Club from 1925 to 1940 and a musical advisor to the Peabody Junior Choir (later renamed the Phoenix Choir of Baltimore). The Virginia C. Blackhead music manuscripts (approximately 1905-1955) contain manuscript scores of songs for voice and piano composed by Blackhead.

Scope and Contents Dated 1914 in the owenership inscription, this little volume includes a number of quotations and original verses inscribed by family and friends, a pencil sketch of a Sopwith Pup, and a caricature of two black waiters with a caption reading "Cook's Tours Personally Conducted."
